Tips for Choosing the Color of Your Garage Door
A few recommendations to help you select a beautiful, classy shade for your garage door.
For your basic suburban home, it’s hard to go wrong with a white garage door. But, if your home has a particular architectural style—or if you just want to do something a bit bolder with your garage door—you may find yourself facing a broad palette of potential color choices. Here are some tips to help you choose the right color for your home and your style.
What’s Your Material?
The material that your garage door is made out of can affect the color choices that are available to you. Obviously, if you are looking for a new manufactured door, you will be limited to the colors available in the catalog. Though steel garage doors can be painted, the finish that comes baked right onto the door is much more durable and it is typically best not to alter it.
If you have a wood door—or are shopping for a new wood garage door—you will have more options. Paint can be custom-mixed to any color of the rainbow, and wood stains come in a huge variety of shades as well.
Don’t Match—Complement
One important tip to keep in mind when choosing the color of your garage door is that you don’t want to just match the color of your home’s façade. This will make your garage door blend in too much and you risk ending up with a huge expanse of “blah.” Instead of matching other colors on your home, look to complement them. For example, if you have a brick or stone home look to the natural variations in the color of this material to find a tone that will look good on your garage door without creating a matchy-matchy look.
Always Test First
It can be hard to visualize what a color will really look like based on just a swatch. To make sure you will like the color you’ve chosen, we recommend painting or staining a large piece of plywood, then leaning it up against the garage door at different times of day to see how it looks.
Don’t Forget Your Shutters
If you are working with a color like red or navy, designers would not recommend you paint your garage door to match your shutters. It would just be too much color. However, if you are working with natural wood tones, you may very well end up using the same shade for both. At Dynamic Garage Door, we can make sure that your shutters and your garage door complement one another perfectly—not only with respect to color, but with respect to design. We offer custom wood garage doors and custom wood architectural shutters, and having both created at the same time can really deliver a coordinated impact for your home’s curb appeal.
